On Wednesday, January 8, 2020 the Council of Ministers announced that members of the regular forces involved in the inter-communal violence that took place in Al-Geneina ,West Darfur last week , will soon be identified in order to lift their immunity.

The Council stressed that this would be the method that would be followed in dealing with such disputes, confirming that the investigation committee formed by the Attorney General would conclude its work soon, and those involved in the bloody clashes would be brought to trial.

In a related development, Minister of Culture and Information who is also the government’s spokesperson, Faisal Muhammad Salih said in press statements that during the regular meeting chaired by Dr. Abdullah Hamdouk, the council had heard an enlightenment about the incidents of Al-Geneina.

The council’s meeting stressed the need to revitalize the work of the National Arms Collection Committee in order to carry out its tasks in collecting weapons and preventing its spread among citizens”. Saleh added.

The problem that occurred in El Geneina had two dimensions. The first is the politicization of tribes, which is a phenomenon in a number of states besides the proliferation of weapons, which led to exacerbation of the crisis that left dozens dead and scores wounded as well as 80 thousand displaced”. He further added.

He pointed out that the presence of the high level delegation in AL-Geneina that led by Prime Minister Dr. Abdullah Hamdouk and First Vice-President of the Sovereign Council, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo , was a clear indication of the transitional government leadership interest to find a just solution to the recent tribal clashes.

According to Saleh, the Prime Minister praised the great role played by the armed forces, RSF, as well as police and intelligence services in maintaining security and providing a safe environment for organizations to assist those displaced by latest inter-tribal violence in Al-Geneina, West Darfur.

It is noteworthy that the Council of Ministers also heard a report from the ministerial delegation that accompanied members of the Sovereign Council on their visit to the city of Nyala. However, the purpose of the delegation’s visit to Nyala was to get acquainted with the looting, destruction and vandalism of the former UNAMID camp located in Southern vicinity of the city.

An investigation committee has been formed to look into the matter, and present its finding in near future”. The minister of interior said.
