The government of South Darfur state has launched massive campaigns to arrest citizens and activists in the city of Kass and the neighboring camps for the displaced people.

The apprehension comes against the backdrop of violent incidents that accompanied protests in the city of kass a week ago.

Last week, the city of Kass, in the state of South Darfur, witnessed demonstrations that ended with the burning of the prosecutors and police headquarters, in protest against an armed attack by militias on
Boronga village  near Kass and other villages, that led to the killing and wounding of  scores of citizens.

It was not clear whether the state authorities had taken similar measures to pursue the gunmen accused of launching attacks on the residents of the village Boronga.

The general coordinator of the camps for the displaced people and refugees, Yagoub Mohamed Abdallah Fawry, said that 11 members of the resistance committees and activists had been arrested , and the
apprehension was still continuing.

“The arrests are taking place on false and fabricated charges against them with unfair legitimacy from the new governor of South Darfur, Musa Mahdi” Yagoub Mohamed Abdallah added.

The statement held the Governor of South Darfur, Musa Mahdi, responsible for killing, burning, looting, arresting and displacing the citizens of the Kass and Shataya localities.

“We call on human rights and humanitarian organizations, activists, lawyers and all honorable people and people of good conscience to intervene urgently and immediately  in order to restore the freedom
and dignity of the displaced who were arrested by treachery and force.” Fwry further added.

The overall coordinator , stressed that the practice of protest vigils, sit-ins and peaceful marches is a right guaranteed by international conventions and treaties related to human rights that cannot be suppressed by a decree and emergency laws that violate human freedoms, according to the statement.

SLM Nur condemns
For its part, the Sudan Liberation Movement headed by Abdel Wahid Mohamed Nour condemned the arrests campaign, saying that it was not based on any legal justification, and its aim was to intimidate
critics of government policies and those who objected to its behavior and failure, and it brings to mind the memory of the oppression and abuse of honorable people in the era of tyrant Omar al-Bashir.

Spokesman for the armed struggle  movement, Mohamed Abdel-Rahman Al-Nayer, said in a statement that the campaign launched by the government of South Darfur state began Friday and continued on
Saturday, affecting dozens of citizens and resistance committees in Kass locality, where the number of detainees reached about twenty people.

“We warn the Khartoum government against the consequences of its repressive policies, abuse of citizens, freeing the hand of militias to kill innocent civilians, plunder their property and confiscate
their lands. However, if  Khartoum government persists in its aggressive practices and its reckless policies and silencing citizens’ mouths that may force us to reconsider how to deal with it” Nayer
concluded.
