UNAMID forces deployed in Kalma camp, 17 kilometers east of South Darfur State, conducted their last patrols inside the camp on Thursday.

UNAMID troops have been providing protection to the camp’s IDPs   since 2008.

However, Darfur 24 accompanied the mission’s forces, in its last patrol, which covered all parts of the camp, passing through the sit-in of the IDPs who rejected the mission’s exit.

The UN Security Council decided to terminate the mandate of the peacekeeping mission in Darfur and start its exit by December 31, 2020.

Head of the UNAMID mission office in Kalma IDP camp, Islam Khan told  Darfur 24 that the mission ended its security patrols in the camp, at 11:00 hour on December 31, and stated that the mission personnel are committed to what the Security Council decided to end the mandate of the mission and its exit from the Darfur region.

Meanwhile the displaced people  hope that the Security Council will reverse its decision during the gradual exit period for the mission, which ends by May 2021

General Coordinator for IDPs and Refugees in Darfur, Yaqoub Mohamad Abdallah, declared  IDPs  rejection of any forces that the government intends to deploy to protect IDP camps.

The city of Nyala, the capital of South Darfur, witnessed hundreds of people marching peacefully to the state government headquarters to demand a reversal of the mission’s exit decision.

Protesters handed over  memorandum to the state governor, who confirmed in turn that the government had no hand in the decision for the mission’s exit.
