The state of South Darfur has launched a popular initiative aimed at assisting those affected by the Gereida IDP camps’ fire.
More than 3,500 families were left in the open air after fire burned their houses on April 11, in Gereida 80 km South of Nyala, the capital of south Darfur state.
Speaking to Sudan News Agency SUNA on Wednesday, to launch a Popular Initiative for Relief of Gereida, governor of South Darfur, Musa Mahdi Ishaq, said that Gereida camp for displaced persons, which houses more than 43,000 is one of the largest IDP camps in the state, describing the fire as a disaster and that it is the fourth in two years, adding that Current losses exceed the state’s capabilities.
Musa called on voluntary and governmental organizations, international organizations, companies and charitable individuals to provide relief and support to the citizens in Gereida IDP camps.
The governor acknowledged the current economic living conditions and the suffering endured by the Sudanese people, saying that the government had set up a portfolio of strategic consumer goods at an amount of 225 million pounds in cooperation with banks in the state to ease the burden of living
