Nyala, September 20(Darfur24) South Darfur Ministry of Health has warned of a possible health disaster due to the mixing of sewage water with drinking water sources in Nyala, the state capital.

Director of the Environmental Health Department at the Ministry of Health in South Darfur State, Tahani Ahmed Musa, said that the torrential rains that swept through the city of Nyala last Saturday night had serious health and environmental impacts after the fall of thousands of latrines, which calls for rapid intervention from the government and organizations.

Tahani revealed to Darfur 24 that drinking water in the city of Nyala is contaminated by 92% in the municipality of Nyala, and 60% in the northern locality of Nyala, after a survey conducted by its administration and taking samples from water wells.

She attributed the high pollution in the south and center of the city to the waste that is dumped into the valley stream and the sewage from the large Nyala prison, and confirmed that they informed the Nyala municipality to sit with the prison administration and demand that it be removed from its current location. With a large number of guests.

Tahani said that the landfill north of the city is one of the causes of water pollution because it is in a dirt hill, which helped in the descent of water towards the creeks that flow directly into Wadi Nyala, and demanded the state government to fund the new landfill west of the city.

Tahani confirmed the emergence of diarrhoea, typhoid and intestinal diseases due to water pollution, and warned that the fall of latrines and the fragile environmental and health situation will lead to disaster in the absence of rapid intervention.

Samah Adam Hassan, Director of the Emergency Department at the Ministry of Health, South Darfur State, told Darfur 24 that they received daily reports of the collapse of latrines in localities affected by torrential rains and floods. She confirmed that there is an increase in the breeding of mosquitoes and flies, which calls for taking more precautions and intensifying campaigns of foggy and spray spraying. She expected that watery diarrhea will appear in someLocalities that are difficult to reach, and justified this because of the contamination of the water and the mixing of potable wells with polluted flood waters.

She demanded that the government authorities allow the localities to support the health sectors in the localities and not rely on the state.
