November 29, Nairobi — On Thursday, Sudan reported 43,490 cholera cases and 1,800 deaths.

New cases were reported in Khartoum, Gezira, Al Qadarif, Kassala, Nile River, Northern State, White Nile, and Sennar, the health ministry said.

15 new cases of dengue fever were also reported, raising the total number of infections to over 8,000. Sudan’s dengue fever surge has been particularly severe in Kassala and Khartoum.

Earlier this week, the United Nations said that the escalation of the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has limited the population’s access to health services due to its impact on staff, medical supplies and fuel in health centres. 80 percent of health facilities in areas worst affected by the conflict are not functioning.

In Khartoum’s East Nile district, a surge in cholera cases is overwhelming health facilities. The cases were reported coinciding with the arrival of people displaced by recent RSF attacks in Gezira.

“The health situation has become explosive,” an Emergency Room official told the Sudan Tribune, citing increased patient numbers and a critical shortage of medical supplies.
