December 6, Nairobi — The United States Department of State released a statement on Thursday condemning in the “strongest terms” the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacks this week on Zamzam internally displaced persons camp in North Darfur.

“The United States calls on the RSF, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), and aligned forces to halt all military activity in and around Zamzam camp and other such camps where the Sudanese people have sought refuge from the horrific violence that has engulfed their country and produced the world’s worst humanitarian crisis,” the statement said.

Zamzam is Sudan’s biggest displacement camp housing around one million people. The U.S. state department said at least eight people had died in the camp and many more were injured. The attacks also disrupted humanitarian organization’s ability to deliver emergency relief supplies.

Darfur24’s reporting has revealed that at least 21 people have been killed and thousands are fleeing. Nearly 430 households were estimated to have been displaced from Zamzam on Tuesday, following the repeated shelling in the camp.

A group of international non-governmental organizations released a statement saying that the RSF’s intense bombardment of Zamzam is devastating civilians and forcing aid workers to leave the site.

The Yale University Humanitarian Research Centre also released satellite imagery on Tuesday showing significant damage in the camp between December 1 and 3. Photos revealed destroyed buildings, smoke from munitions, and a large crater outside a camp for displaced people.
