January 19, 2025 -Djibouti – Darfur24 The Republic of Djibouti, which chairs the current session of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), expressed its concern over the killings and human rights violations against civilians in Wad Madani, Al-Jazera State, and other areas across Sudan.
Djibouti said, in a statement published on the IGAD website, that it “unequivocally condemns these acts, and urges accountability by bringing those responsible to justice and ensuring the protection of the rights of civilians.”
It stressed the need to prevent further escalation of the Sudanese crisis and its potential impact on neighboring countries.
It called on all parties to exercise restraint and give priority to de-escalation efforts and end the conflict in Sudan immediately through a comprehensive dialogue that preserves the unity, security and stability of the state.
The army and allied groups committed serious violations in Al-Jazeera State against people in civilian clothing, including killing by slitting their throats, throwing them into the Nile waters, and shooting them, according to videos circulating on social media.
The violations included residents of Al-Kanabi, a community of people working in agriculture in the Al-Jazeera Scheme.
In January 2024, the head of the Sovereignty Council and army commander, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, decided to freeze Sudan’s membership in IGAD in protest at the invitation of the commander of the Rapid Support Forces, Lieutenant General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, to participate in a summit of the organization.
