January 21, 2025 Um-Dafoug – Darfur24 A local official at “Brawou” camp for Sudanese refugees in the Central African Republic revealed deteriorating humanitarian conditions for refugees inside the camp due to food shortages after suspension of UNHCR support.

The camp is located 65 kilometers from the Sudanese city of Um Dafoug on the border between Sudan and the Central African Republic.

The community leader, who preferred to remain anonymous, told “Darfur24” that Sudanese refugees in the camp were forced to sell their personal belongings to provide food after suspension of support and disbursements from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) since last November.

He added, “The refugees had to sell the mattresses they sleep on, their clothes, utensils, and other items to provide food, medicine, and water, which has become difficult to obtain.” He noted that the organization used to disburse money without food before the disbursement stopped in November.

He mentioned that the refugees protested the suspension of financial disbursements and the poor conditions in the camp on Monday, but there was no response from the relevant authorities.

He pointed out that the authorities in Central African Republic arrest any refugee who tries to work in the market.

According to the official, the camp’s population is about 24,000 refugees, with numbers increasing daily due to ongoing armed confrontations between the Sudanese Army and its allies on one side and RSF and its allies on the other in El-Fasher and several areas of North Darfur.
