Addis Ababa, February 13(Darfur24)

The Civil Democratic Alliance of the Revolutionary Forces (Sumoud) have called on the African Peace and Security Council to condition the lifting of the freeze on Sudan’s membership in the African Union on achieving actual progress in stopping the war and establishing peace, through a legitimate process that leads to a democratic civil transition.

The head of the (Sumoud) Alliance, Abdalla Hamdok, sent a letter to the African Peace and Security Council, which is holding a meeting on Friday to discuss the Sudanese crisis, in which he noted the absence of legitimacy in Sudan since the coup of October 25, 2021, stressing that lifting the freeze on membership must be conditional on stopping the war and transitioning to democratic civilian rule.

Hamdok’s letter reviewed the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan, highlighting the escalation of violations against civilians, the exacerbation of displacement, asylum and hunger crises, and the collapse of infrastructure.

Hamdok called on the council to take serious decisions in its upcoming session, including shedding light on the tragedy of the war in Sudan globally, and making it a priority on the international agenda, given the serious threat it poses to regional and international peace and security.

He also called for taking immediate measures to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches those who deserve it, and to ensure the protection of civilians through effective measures and strict monitoring mechanisms, and to reach an immediate ceasefire.

He stressed the need to launch a Sudanese civil dialogue process that provides a framework for establishing a comprehensive, just and equitable peace that addresses the roots of the crisis in Sudan.

The council called for activating and developing the work of the five-party presidential mechanism, and ensuring coordination of its efforts with the rest of the mechanisms established by the African Union to address the Sudanese crisis.

Sumud coalition said in a statement that the message it sent to the African Peace and Security Council comes as a continuation of the efforts of democratic civil forces to shed light on the humanitarian catastrophe caused by the war in Sudan, which is approaching the completion of its second year, and to mobilize regional and international support to help stop the war and deal with its repercussions urgently and immediately.
