Port Sudan, February 14(Darfur24)

Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Youssef informed African Union AU on Thursday that the army and allied forces have extended their control over the country, calling for revoking Sudan’s membership suspension in the African organization.

The minister sent a written message to the foreign ministers of the member states of the African Peace and Security Council, ahead of the council’s meeting scheduled for Friday in Addis Ababa, according to the Sudan News Agency.

According to the message , the Sudanese Armed Forces and the joint forces representing the movements that signed the Juba Agreement confronted the aggression of the Rapid Support Forces and succeeded in extending their control over the country.

The message called on the African Peace and Security Council to reconsider the African Union’s assessment of the situation in Sudan in light of recent developments, demanding the necessity of Sudan’s return to its( natural place) in the continental organization and resuming its role in African work.

AU suspended Sudan’s membership in 2021 after the military, led by Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, overthrew the civilian government that took over following the overthrow of former President Omar al-Bashir in 2019.

The head of the (Sumud) coalition, Abdalla Hamdok, had earlier sent a letter to the African Peace and Security Council, which is holding a meeting on Friday to discuss the Sudanese crisis, in which he noted the lack of legitimacy in Sudan since the coup of October 25, 2021, stressing that lifting the freeze on membership must be conditional on stopping the war and transitioning to democratic civilian rule.

Hamdok’s letter reviewed the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan, highlighting the escalation of violations against civilians, the worsening crises of displacement, asylum and hunger, and the collapse of infrastructure.

A delegation from the coalition held consultations on stopping the war in Sudan, on the sidelines of the African Union summit held in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, discussing the need to advance efforts to stop the war, address the humanitarian crisis and protect civilians in Sudan.
