Ministry of Health in Central Darfur State revealed the deaths of more than 65 children among 850 cases of thyroid disease in the Trej area of ​​Zalingei, the state capital.

In a statement to Darfur 24, Mohamed El Amin Rizqallah, the Minister of Health in Central Darfur State, announced a “frightening” spread of the disease in the Trej area of ​​Zalingei and some neighboring areas.

He added that “authorities have monitored more than 850 cases of thyroid disease, including 65 deaths among children, in addition to eight miscarriages among pregnant women.” He indicated that the Trej area has become an endemic area due to the alarming spread of the disease.

He pointed out that the causes of the disease are still unknown, while some studies indicate that the cause is related to drinking water. He described the situation as “frightening,” with almost every home containing a case.

The minister revealed efforts with a foreign organization to transfer some patient samples to the central laboratory in Port Sudan for more accurate diagnosis and to determine the causes of its spread.

He called on foreign organizations and United Nations agencies to urgently intervene to contain the disease.
