El Fasher, June 5(Darfur 24)

Medical sources and eyewitnesses in El Fasher, North Darfur, reported on Wednesday that 14 people were killed and 16 others were injured as a result of intense artillery shelling by the Rapid Support Forces on the Abshok camp for displaced persons north of the city.

A medical source at the camp’s health center confirmed to Darfur 24 that the shelling resulted in the immediate death of 14 people, including women and children, while 16 others were injured, some of whom were in critical condition. They received initial medical treatment at the center before being transferred to El Fasher hospitals for treatment.

For his part, tribal leader Mohamed Ibrahim explained to Darfur 24 that the shelling targeted various areas of the camp, resulting in a large number of casualties, the majority of whom were women and children.

He added, “The bombing caused a near-total paralysis of movement within the camp, and the Naivasha market and the communal kitchen were temporarily shut down.”

According to the Abshok camp emergency room, the camp has been subjected to repeated bombing since the outbreak of the war, resulting in dozens of deaths and injuries among the displaced.

The Rapid Support Forces have imposed a tight siege on El Fasher since May of last year, as part of their efforts to control the city, which is the last major stronghold of the Sudanese army in the Darfur region.
