A woman and a Civil Defense member were killed, and others were injured on Saturday in an explosion at a fireworks and stationery store in the fourth district of Karari locality in Omdurman.
Khartoum State Media reported in a statement that “a fire broke out in a fireworks and stationery store in the fourth district of Thawra – Karari locality – and resulted in explosions caused by the fireworks.”
The media pointed out that Civil Defense forces rushed to extinguish the fire, which resulted in the death of a Civil Defense member and a woman, in addition to the injury of five civilians and Civil Defense members.
The Director of Civil Defense in Khartoum State, Police Major General Al-Matari Ahmed, explained that the fire lasted for three hours inside a residential apartment containing stationery and fireworks that had been stored two days earlier without the knowledge of Civil Defense authorities and neighbors.
Al-Matari called on citizens not to allow the storage of materials in neighborhoods without the knowledge of the relevant authorities, stressing that this phenomenon poses a danger that threatens the lives of innocent citizens.
The Governor of Khartoum offered his condolences to the families of the victims and inspected the site of the accident and the precautionary measures taken by the Civil Defense Forces.
