ort Sudan, July 6(Darfur 24)

The United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM) revealed on Sunday that the number of people fleeing El Fasher Locality in North Darfur State has risen to 1,014,748, representing 10% of the total internally displaced population in Sudan.

The organization said, in a statement obtained by Darfur 24, that 781,998 people were displaced from El Fasher and Zamzam camp between April 1, 2024, and June 29.

It stated that the number of people displaced from Zamzam camp reached 498,955, representing 99% of the camp’s population, with 75% fleeing to Tawila and 10% to El Fasher.

The displaced people from Zamzam camp fled following clashes that erupted between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF)on the one hand, and the army and the joint force of armed movements on the other hand, last April.

The organization stated that the number of displaced people from Zamzam camp decreased due to increased crossings into Chad, to which 1,125,341 people have fled since the beginning of the conflict in April 2023.

It reported that North Darfur State remained a major point for those displaced due to clashes, with 117 incidents resulting in displacement documented. Internally, 85% of these are related to attacks and armed clashes.

The organization revealed that the number of displaced persons in North Darfur State has risen to 1,794,860, making it the third largest state in terms of the number of displaced persons after Khartoum and South Darfur.

The organization expects continued waves of displacement from North Darfur due to clashes, especially from El Fasher to the localities of Tawila, Mellit, and Kutum.
