Nyala , August 10(Darfur 24)

Eyewitnesses and local sources confirmed on Sunday that a guided missile attack was launched on a Rapid Support Forces training camp north of Nyala the day before yesterday, Friday.

Eyewitnesses from the northeast neighborhoods of Nyala told Darfur 24 that they heard two explosions within close proximity of each other, causing strong shaking in homes at midday on Friday, with columns of smoke rising towards Saqra Mountain, located on the El Fasher road.

Consistent sources revealed to Darfur 24 that the explosion targeted UNAMID’s “Super Camp” headquarters, which was handed over to the Sudanese government in 2022 for civilian use. The headquarters was later converted by the Rapid Support Forces into a training facility for its personnel.

A source reported that the airstrike killed a number of soldiers, while the injured were taken to a hospital in the Jabal neighborhood, east of Nyala. Among the injured were soldiers Haitham and Adam, who sustained fractures in their right and left feet and head.

The sources who spoke to Darfur 24 did not provide the exact number of casualties, given the disappearance of some soldiers and the charred bodies of some following the bombing of the headquarters.

Furthermore, a senior Rapid Support Forces commander accused some elements who had joined the Rapid Support Forces as trainers of sending intelligence to the army, which resulted in the bombing of the camp.

The source noted that these individuals disappeared immediately after the explosion and have not been seen since.

One source indicated that the bombing targeted Friday, the only day on which soldiers do not leave. He explained that on other days, they leave the camp after 7:00 AM, which stretches 13 km and is an extension of the Al-Mazlakan camp near Wadi Andar. He described the camp leadership’s procedures for entering and exiting as strict, including inspections and prohibiting photographs of soldiers and officers.

Eyewitnesses said they witnessed a funeral ceremony for a soldier, the brother of a captain in the Rapid Support Forces, in the eastern Riyadh neighborhood, who was killed in the airstrike that targeted the camp.

Other sources told Darfur 24 that they saw small movements of more than five flights landing and taking off from the UNAMID runway on Friday evening, following the bombing that same day.

The Sudanese army intensified its drone strikes on vital sites and headquarters of the Rapid Support Forces in the city of Nyala, following the cessation of fighter jet flights since the downing of an Antonov fighter jet last February.

The Tassir coalition, which includes the Rapid Support Forces, armed movements, and political and civil society groups, chose Nyala as the administrative capital of the parallel government, whose Presidential Council and Prime Minister were announced at the end of July.
