Port Sudan, September 9 (Darfur 24)

A UN report has revealed that landslides destroyed around 10 houses and damaged agricultural land in parts of South Darfur State between September 4 and 8. The death toll remains unverified.

The landslides struck the mountainous Tarsin village in East Jebel locality following heavy rains on August 31, which saturated the steep terrain.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said more than 1,000 people affected by the disaster are in urgent need of humanitarian aid.

Satellite images show the area affected by the landslide.

“Reaching the village proved extremely difficult. Aid workers had to transport supplies on donkeys due to mountainous terrain and ongoing downpours. Deliveries took up to 12 hours across steep, waterlogged paths,” OCHA said.

Affected communities require food, non-food items, and essential services, including health, nutrition, water, sanitation, and hygiene.

A joint assessment and response mission, involving local and international NGOs and UN agencies, has been conducted, and essential supplies continue to be delivered to the affected community.
