El Fasher, September 15 (Darfur24)
A majority of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Abu Shouk camp, north of El Fasher in North Darfur State, have fled yet again due to escalating violence, the camp’s civil administration confirmed on Sunday.
Mayor Adam Abdullah Mohammed Sharaf told Darfur24 that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been advancing into Abu Shouk since August 11, forcing thousands of displaced persons to seek safety elsewhere.
“Those fleeing Abu Shouk camp are facing catastrophic conditions in the Al-Fursiya neighborhood and the western sector of El Fasher after they left everything behind,” he said.
Sharaf said the RSF launched an offensive on El Fasher through the camp’s main gate, triggering a mass exodus of IDPs. Many sought refuge in other parts of the city, while others fled further to Tawila, Korma, and Jebel Marra.
Darfur24 correspondents reported on Monday that dozens of families from Abu Shouk camp were seen fleeing, some on foot and others using traditional means of transportation, in search of safety.
Residents who fled are now facing severe hardship amid food shortages, lack of healthcare, and the absence of humanitarian organizations, which have been unable to operate in El Fasher due to the year-long siege imposed since April 2024.
