El Daein – Darfur24

The civilian administration in East Darfur State, affiliated with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has reopened the new El Daein Grand Prison, which had been closed since the outbreak of the war between the army and the RSF.

Earlier this week, Mohamed Idris Khater, head of the state’s civil administration, officially inaugurated the facility, announcing that it was ready to receive inmates.

The prison, located about two kilometers east of El Daein along the railway line connecting El Daein and Al Jalabiya, has a capacity of at least 2,000 inmates.

Over the past three months, the RSF transferred dozens of military, civilian, and political detainees to various prisons in South Darfur due to the lack of an operational facility in El Daein.

In late 2023, the RSF took control of East Darfur State, formed a civilian administration and judiciary, and announced the creation of a federal police force to replace the regular police in the state.
