Nahud, October 14 (Darfur24)

Informed sources in Nahud have revealed the near-total collapse of the health sector, describing a systematic campaign of destruction and looting carried out allegedly by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which currently controls the city.

Private health center owners told Darfur24 they have suffered losses worth thousands of dollars.

According to the sources, 26 private medical centers and clinics were systematically vandalized after being stripped of medical equipment and solar power systems, while government hospitals were looted and destroyed, including diagnostic laboratories, devices, and other essential equipment.

Nahud, one of the largest cities in the Kordofan region, previously provided key public and private medical services and hosts West Kordofan’s main hospital, the Nahud Referral Hospital.

Complete Collapse of Services

Following the RSF takeover, medical services came to a halt, forcing residents to self-medicate.

“There is not a single doctor in the teaching hospital, only nurses and one lab technician,” a source said. “It is the only facility open to the public after citizens were barred from using the referral hospital, which the RSF has occupied and staffed with about 21 medical personnel to treat its own wounded.”

Pharmacies across the city were also looted, with all equipment, supplies, and medicines stolen.

“Nothing remains,” a source said. “The city is witnessing the worst health destruction in its history.”

‘100% Damage’ to Specialized Clinics

Surgical specialist Dr. Al-Dawi Al-Makki described the scale of destruction as catastrophic, saying the greatest losses were in six specialized clinics, including Mohammed Abdul Majeed Clinic, Suleiman Specialized Clinic, Medical Care Specialized Clinic, Al-Khair (Tama) Specialized Clinic, and Mr. Walaa Al-Din Clinic.

Mohammed Al-Amin Specialized Clinic, “All equipment, tools, medicines, doors, windows, and furniture were stolen,” he said. The Mohammed Abdel Majeed Clinic had high-value machines, including an X-ray system.

Huge Financial Losses

Many clinic owners are still unable to fully assess the damage, but initial estimates are staggering.

Dr. Abdul-Azim Abu Bakr, owner of Medical Care Clinic, estimated losses of $120,000, including the theft of the anesthesia machine, lab devices, pharmacy stock, and solar system. His ultrasound clinic, the oldest in the state (operating for 20 years), also lost advanced Doppler machines and an 18-panel solar system, with estimated damages of $35,000.

Hisham Abdel Majeed, owner of the Mohammed Abdel Majeed Clinic, said the value of looted medicines alone exceeded 2 trillion Sudanese pounds, adding that all five drug stores attached to the clinic were completely emptied.

Lawlessness and Displacement

Since the RSF seized Nahud in early May, the city has descended into lawlessness, chaos, and mass looting. Many residents fled to nearby villages, only to be displaced again due to the lack of services and insecurity, eventually moving toward eastern and northern Sudan.

Residents and health professionals warn that Nahud’s health system has been destroyed beyond recognition, leaving the population without access to basic medical care as the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate.
