Nyala, October 20 (Darfur24)
Medical sources revealed on Saturday that people in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state, had developed symptoms of suspected dengue fever.
A medical source from a health clinic in Nyala told Darfur24 that his clinic had received more than 40 suspected dengue fever cases over the past week.
He stated that the symptoms included high body temperature, fever, vomiting, and nausea, with the majority of patients having temperatures as high as 45 degrees Celsius, indicating suspected dengue fever.
Another medical source who spoke to Darfur24 attributed the failure to detect the disease to the lack of a dedicated testing device in Nyala.
He explained that diagnostic devices are usually supplied from northern Sudan and are currently unavailable in Nyala, noting that equipment arriving from South Sudan is often damaged or improperly stored during transport.
Badr al-Din al-Nadhir, a resident, told Darfur24 that he had suffered from persistent vomiting and nausea, in addition to a high body temperature over the past few days.
He explained that he visited the clinic twice within 48 hours, but the actual illness was not diagnosed. He was only prescribed antibiotics, according to his statement.
A source at the State Ministry of Health in Nyala declined to comment when asked by a Darfur 24 reporter whether there were cases of the disease in other parts of the state.
Dengue fever is transmitted by the bite of infected Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, and is an epidemic that has spread to several Sudanese states, including Khartoum.
