Port Sudan, November 4 (Darfur24)
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Famine Review Committee announced on Monday that famine has been confirmed in El Fasher in North Darfur and Kadugli in South Kordofan.
In its latest report, the committee said that the situation in Dilling, also in South Kordofan, mirrors conditions in Kadugli, but a lack of sufficient data has so far prevented a formal famine declaration.
The report warned that famine is expected to persist in El Fasher and Kadugli until January 2026, and could spread to 20 additional areas likely to receive displaced populations across North, South, and East Darfur, as well as West and South Kordofan.
According to the IPC, more than 21 million people in Sudan are currently facing high levels of acute food insecurity, a situation expected to continue until at least May 2026.
The committee emphasized that escalating conflict in Darfur and Kordofan has deepened the hunger crisis and further disrupted livelihoods and humanitarian access.
Famine, the report noted, is marked by a total collapse of livelihoods, severe malnutrition, and widespread deaths due to starvation.
