Nyala, December 2 (Darfur24)

More than five thousand displaced people sheltering in the city of Nyala are facing an increasingly dire situation after several free communal kitchens that had been providing meals to those affected by the war were forced to shut down.

The Nyala Emergency Room and Health Centers said in a statement seen by Darfur24 that reports from its field teams indicate that the humanitarian situation inside the shelters is near a ‘complete collapse.’

The statement added that the urgent needs extend far beyond food, noting severe shortages of medicine, clean water, and essential supplies for children, women, and the elderly.

According to the Emergency Room, many of the displaced residents had been entirely dependent on the daily meals offered by the free kitchens. With their closure, hunger now threatens thousands.

Nyala has received large numbers of displaced people fleeing conflict in the Kordofan, Khartoum, and Gezira regions, according to the Sudanese Relief and Humanitarian Operations Agency. The new arrivals have been distributed across six shelters inside the city.

However, the communal kitchens run by the Emergency Room and health centers are frequently forced to suspend operations due to insufficient support and a lack of resources, leaving thousands of vulnerable people without food.
