Um Barmbita, January 10 (Darfur24)
Two women were killed and several civilians injured on Friday when a landmine exploded targeting a passenger lorry on the road between Um Barmbita and Tandak in South Kordofan, renewing fears over the growing threat of landmines to civilian lives in the region.
Witnesses told Darfur24 that the vehicle was travelling to the weekly Tandak market when the mine detonated, killing two women instantly and leaving several passengers injured, some in serious condition.
Othman Al-Tahir, a resident of the area, stated that the affected road is a vital route relied upon daily by residents for transportation and the movement of basic goods, particularly in the absence of alternative routes.
Sources confirmed this was the second landmine incident on the same road within a week.
On Tuesday, January 6, a landmine exploded under a goods vehicle, resulting in serious injuries among civilian passengers.
Sources noted that the repeated incidents highlight the severity of the security and humanitarian situation in the area and underscore the urgent need for intervention by relevant authorities and demining organizations to secure roads and protect civilians, especially as residents continue to travel to markets and livelihood sites.
