Babanusa, March 04 (Darfur24)

Two children were killed on Monday after a landmine exploded in the city of Babanusa in West Kordofan state, underscoring the growing threat posed by unexploded war remnants to civilians returning to the area.

Sumaya Hammad, a resident who recently returned to the city, told Darfur24 that the device detonated near the children, killing them instantly and leaving the community in shock and mourning.

Suleiman Omar Bilal, executive director of Al-Salam locality, said during a press briefing that at least seven civilians have been killed by landmine explosions in the city’s streets over recent months, while 15 others have suffered amputations.

He warned that clearing explosive remnants of war remains a major obstacle to the safe return of residents, calling on humanitarian organizations to support demining efforts. He added that the scale of contamination exceeds the capacity of the engineering teams currently operating in the city.

Nearly 2,000 civilians who recently returned to Babnusa are facing harsh humanitarian conditions, amid widespread debris, damaged infrastructure, and limited access to water and health services.

The Rapid Support Forces took control of Babnusa in December 2025 after more than a year of fighting with the Sudanese army’s 22nd Division.
