The fighting in El-Geneina city in West Darfur state between Masalit and Arabs forced hundreds of residents to cross the Sudanese-Chadian border in search of safety, at a time when the survivors were unable to bury dozens of corpses in Krinding camp for displaced in El Geneina.
The acting Sultan of Masalit, Sad al-din Baharuddin, told Darfur 24 that the bodies of some of the camp’s dead whose number is unknown are still in the open and no one can get close to the place. “We have been waiting in vain since yesterday for the government forces to do something. He added.
Bahr al-Din revealed to “Darfur 24” that at least 30 people from his tribe were killed and about 14wounded and final death toll is not known, while the Emir of Arab Tribes, Massar Abdul Rahman Aseel, told “Darfur 24” that 11 people from his tribe lost their lives and 15 wounded, as of this morning.
The Massalit tribe leader, said that hundreds of residents from areas adjacent to El-Geneina and villages of voluntary return fled to the neighboring Chadian villages fearing for their lives.
“Thousands fled to the gardens in the vicinity of El-Geneina, some of them to the homes of their relatives and others took shelter in schools.” He stressed.
Meanwhile, Several sources confirmed that sporadic shooting was heard this morning in several areas of El-Geneina city and its periphery.
Both of Arab and Massalit tribal leaders confirmed that the incident was triggered Sunday, on the backdrop of the killing of a person belonging to Arab tribes.
The leader of Arab tribes said that the current conflict was triggered by Masalit youth who considered themselves resistance committees, establishing security patrols around the camp and some neighboring markets as well as classifying Arabs as supporters of the ousted regime.
“We warned Masalit leaders in the past against the consequences of the unacceptable behavior of IDPs youth that affiliated to resistance committees. We told them that the conduct of their IDP youth would lead to fragmentation of social peace but no one cared. ” The Arab leader said.
The incident led to the suspension of the peace talks that currently taking place in the city of Juba between the transitional government and the armed movements, pending the handling of the situation, the investigation of crimes against citizens and bringing perpetrators to trial.
A delegation from the Sovereign Council and the Council of Ministers is expected to arrive in El-Geneina to get first hand information and calm the security conditions.
