Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, discussed in his office at the Republican Palace Thursday with Mr. Volker Peretz, Head of the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan(UNITAMS),
UNITAMS chief lauded the courageous steps taken by the government of the transitional period to complete the peace process, including the declaration of principles agreement signed recently in Juba between the government and the head of the Popular Movement Abdulaziz Al-Hilu .
Volker said the meeting was fruitful and practical, touched on development issues in eastern Sudan and the states of Darfur as well as the role that the United Nations could play in this regard.
Volker said in a press statement after his meeting with Al-Burhan that their talks dealt with the challenges facing the transitional period, and the efforts and assistance that the United Nations mission could provide to advance the peace process, especially after the agreement on the declaration of principles between the government and SPLM-North leader Abdul Aziz Al-hilu.
The Head of UNITAMS mission recently ended a tour to the states of Darfur, during which he examined the plan of the governments of Darfur states to protect civilians after the departure of the UNAMID’s mission and visited Kalma camp in South Darfur where he listened to the stories that haunt the camp’s displaced people .
