Khartoum, October 19(Darfur24) The United Nations announced, on Wednesday, the displacement of at least 4,000 people as a result of the tribal conflict in the Lagwa area of West Kordofan state.

 

According to a statement by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs OCHA, today, Darfur 24 obtained a copy of it, at least 4,000 people (about 800 families) were displaced and many houses in the city were burned and looted. The statement added that as of October 16, 12 people were reported killed and 20 injured.

 

Tensions escalated between the Misseriya and Nuba tribes in West Kordofan locality in Lagwa after a dispute over land ownership in the village of Janjaro (about 3 km east of the town)

 

On October 13, the Misseriya tribesmen of Lakwa claimed the land as theirs, causing an exchange of fire between the local Misseriya and the Nuba in the town market and continued during the 14th and 15th of October.

 

According to the IOM Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) report, displaced people have taken refuge in the Laqwa military compound, the district military command, the girls’ school, and the police station.

 

The statement continued. An unconfirmed number of people were reported to have been displaced to Dilling locality in South Kordofan State and authorities have deployed security forces from West and South Kordofan to contain the situation.

An estimated 102,000 people live in Lagwa locality, of whom 29,200 are in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the 2022 Sudan Humanitarian Needs Review.
