El Geneina , Feb 16 (Darfur 24)An official at the Ministry of Health in West Darfur State said that an International Committee of the Red Cross team had operated on hundreds of war-wounded people in El Geneina Hospital.

El Geneina Hospital returned to providing treatment services last August, after it was closed due to military operations between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, before the latter was able to control West Darfur state.

As of last December, a foreign team affiliated with the International Committee of the Red Cross began performing orthopedic surgeries on war-wounded patients in El Geneina Hospital.

The Director General of the Ministry of Health in West Darfur State, Abdel Salam Mustafa, told Darfur 24, “The foreign medical team, in cooperation with the medical staff at El Geneina Hospital, performed more than 300 free surgeries for those injured in the recent war.”

He pointed out that operations are still ongoing and open to all infected people in the states.

Abdel Salam stated that the treatment services at El Geneina Hospital expanded significantly after the entry of a number of organizations.

He added: “Foreign organizations provided medicines, medical devices and equipment, and also provided financial incentives to hospital workers, including doctors, workers and administrators.”

About 70% of health facilities in Sudan have stopped, due to insecurity, scarcity of medicines and aids, and lack of medical personnel, while international organizations and emergency rooms are trying to cover this shortage.
