The United States expressed concern about reports of arms shipments from Iran to the Sudanese army, which is waging a war with the Rapid Support Forces.

US Ambassador to Sudan John Godfrey said that Washington is “deeply concerned about external support” for both the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces.

He added to journalists, “There are reports of the resumption of relations between Sudan and Iran that could include Iranian material support for the Sudanese army, which is a matter of concern to us.”

Godfrey noted that the United States “urged external parties to refrain from providing material support to the two warring parties,” without naming them.

He explained that this “prolongs the fighting, prolongs the war. It also reduces the chances of finding a way out of the conflict through negotiation.”

Last month, the Rapid Support Forces published on social media what they said was the wreckage of an Iranian-made “Muhajir” army drone.

Bloomberg News, citing Western officials, also reported that Iran is supplying weapons to the Sudanese army.

During the era of former President Omar al-Bashir, who was ousted from power in 2019, Sudan developed close relations with Iran.

With the Sudanese army controlling areas along the Red Sea, a large-scale Iranian presence would worry Western powers, at a time when Yemeni Houthi rebels are targeting international cargo ships on the other side of the strategic sea lane, in solidarity with the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Thousands have been killed since the outbreak of war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces in April last year.

The statement quoted an official military source in the General Command of the Jordanian Armed Forces as saying, “On Wednesday, a Royal Air Force plane dropped urgent medical aid on the Jordanian field hospital in Gaza.”

He explained that “the landing operation came in cooperation with the British side, in order to enhance the hospital’s capabilities and increase the ability of medical personnel to provide health and treatment services to alleviate the suffering of the people in the Gaza Strip.”

According to the Jordanian army, aid is dropped using GPS-guided parachutes.

The source added, “This step comes as a continuation of the efforts of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to stand by our brothers in light of the war on the Gaza Strip,” noting that “the hospital continues to operate despite the difficult conditions it is suffering from as a result of the war on Gaza.”

The latest landing operation is the twelfth announced by the Jordanian Air Force since the start of the war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas on October 7.

The previous landing operations were allocated to the Jordanian field hospital and about 800 people trapped inside the Church of St. Porphyrius in the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood in northern Gaza, on Christmas Eve.

The Netherlands participated with Jordan by landing aid on February 6, and France also participated with Jordan on January 5 by landing seven tons of humanitarian and health aid in the Gaza Strip.

Israel previously said that the landing operations were being coordinated with it.

The Jordanian field hospital in northern Gaza was subjected to an Israeli bombing in mid-November, wounding seven of its 182 staff.

The second Jordanian field hospital, which was sent on November 20 in Khan Yunis, south of the Gaza Strip, was also severely damaged on January 18 as a result of an Israeli bombing, which led to the injury of one of its staff.

The war broke out after the attack launched by Hamas from the Gaza Strip on southern Israel on October 7, which led to the killing of more than 1,160 people, most of them civilians, according to an Agence France-Presse count based on official Israeli data.

In response, Israel launched an attack on the Gaza Strip that has so far left 29,313 dead, the vast majority of them women and children, according to the Hamas Ministry of Health.
