El Geneina , March 25(Darfur 24)The Epidemiology Department of the Ministry of Health, West Darfur, revealed a frightening spread of measles among children under the age of two in the city of El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur State.

Director of the Epidemiology Department at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Khadija Muhammad, said in a statement to “Darfur 24” that there is a significant increase in cases of measles among children.

It reported that the weekly infection rate rose to more than 10 cases within the city of El Geneina among children under the age of two years.

She indicated that the state Ministry of Health informed the federal authorities of the situation of the spread of the disease and demanded the need to send vaccines quickly.

Khadija Muhammad revealed the weakness of therapeutic capabilities in that they only focus on providing vitamins and antibiotics in isolation centers.

The Federal Ministry of Health did not send any medical and treatment aid to West Darfur due to deteriorating security conditions, for more than a year.

“Darfur 24” learned that some families sent their children to Chad to receive the basic doses of routine vaccination against childhood diseases due to the lack of vaccines in West Darfur.
