On Friday, one prisoner was killed and three others were wounded as a result of
the incident that took place in the Copper prison in Nyala, the capital of South
Darfur.
South Darfur Police Comissioner, Major General Niazi Saleh said that
confrontations took place between the police and a group of Nyala prison imates
belonging to the Rapid Support Forces, which led to the death of one of the
inmates and the wounding of three others.
Niyazi told Darfur 24 that police initially used tear gas, but inmates were taking
gas canisters and returning them to the forces, adding, “When the matter became
worse, the police forces fired shots in the air, resulted in the death of one inmate
and the injury of others.
Niyazi explained that the inmates affiliated to the Rapid Support Forces had
been protesting for some time against the harsh sentences that were directed to
them – by the military judiciary of rapid support forces, saying that the sentences
were strict and they were pressing the prison authority to release , noting that
the prisons administration in the state told them that they had no authority to
reduce the sentences.
He added, in light of this situation, they decided to break the prison and escape.

The state police Commissioner warned of the danger of breaking the prison, then
the police dealt with them and managed to prevent them from breaking the
prison, but he stated that for several hours they did not calm down and refused to
enter the cells, which caused chaos inside the prison, a matter that necessitated
reinforcements of large military to control a number of one thousand inmates.
While other sources said that the inmates took advantage of the attendance that
periodically conducted by the prison administration for the prisoners to
assaulted the prison police forces. Meanwhile, riots and chaos erupted, when
the inmates started throwing stones at the prison police , prompting the latter to
shoot, killing one inmate and wounding three others.
