August 19, 2020 -In a surprise move, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement – North, led by Abdel Aziz Al-Hilu, has withdrawn from the negotiation session with the transitional government.

The armed struggle movement’s decision to withdraw from the talks, came against the background of selecting  Commander of the Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan Hemedti as head of the government
negotiations team.

The armed movement, whose stronghold in Kauda, said that  that Hemeti  was not a neutral person and that his forces were involved in violations in Darfur, Kordofan and eastern Sudan.
However, direct negotiations session between the transitional government and the SPLM was supposed to start on Thursday, after a suspension of more than two months.

The Secretary-General of the SPLM, Ammar Amoun, said in a statement that the SPLM’s delegation had previously submitted an official complaint to the mediation on August 18, 2020, in which it explained
its position on the leadership of the Commander of the Rapid Support Forces, Muhammad Hamdan Dagalo (Hamidati) of the transitional government delegation, considering that its forces have committed
heinous violations against Defenseless citizens in the cities and rural areas of Sudan.

The statement affirmed the SPLM’s commitment to the Juba negotiating platform and to continue negotiations within the framework of efforts and endeavors to achieve a comprehensive and just peace in Sudan.
