September 17, 2020 -Deputy chairman of Sudan’s  Transitional Sovereign Council, Lieutenant General Mohamed Hamdan Hemedti, pledged to resolve the issue of the Abyei region, in the same spirit in which Sudan’s issues were addressed in the various regions in order to achieve comprehensive peace in Sudan.

Abyei is located on the border between Sudan and South Sudan, and belongs to West Kordofan State, in the north of which is inhabited by the Misseriya pastoral tribe, and in the south of it is the Ngok Dinka
tribe.

Hemeti met in his office at the Presidential Palace today, Thursday, a delegation of the Abyei region headed by the Minister of East African Affairs and the official in charge of the Abyei region file in the Government of Southern Sudan, Deng Alor.

The conflict in Abyei began since the independence of Sudan in 1965, when the area was placed within the borders of northern Sudan

In 2005, the north and south reached a historic agreement between them, establishing a protocol for the Abyei region. However, fierce battles took place between the two parties in the years 2008 and 2011
