Khartoum, October 5(Darfur24) The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations , said  the second  anniversary of the signing of the Sudan Peace Agreement in Juba is a strong reminder that much remains to be accomplished.

 

He expressed his appreciation for the efforts made to implement some provisions of the Darfur track, especially the establishment of the Permanent Ceasefire Committee, which is chaired by the UN mission.

 

 

UNITAMS chief  remarks coincided with criticism by the governor of the Darfur region, Minnawi , accusing  the UN mission  of failing to perform its role, and  only  focusing its activities on Khartoum.

 

Minawi said the mission that succeeded the peacekeeping mission in Darfur UNAMID focused its work in Khartoum, at a time when it should play roles in Darfur,  as he put it.

 

Volcker urged the parties to implement the agreement and added: “There is an urgent need for the full implementation of the Juba Peace Agreement, including security arrangements, the rapid deployment of the joint security force to ensure the protection of civilians, in addition to the establishment of relevant commissions such as the Commission for Refugees and Displaced Persons, the Transitional Justice Commission, and the Lands and Hawakir Commission , the Commission for Travelers and Pastoralists, and the implementation of other provisions related to the sharing of power and wealth and reparations”.

 

He stressed that only the Sudanese parties can implement this agreement and bring peace to the country.

 

Volcker invited the Sudan Liberation Army Movement – Abdel Wahed al-Nur, and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement – North – Abdel Aziz al-Hilu wing to join the peace operations in order to achieve a comprehensive and sustainable peace in all of Sudan.
