May 7, 2020 (Elfashir) At least One prisoner was killed and nine
others were injured during a riot in Shalaa prison in North Darfur.
However, shalaa jail which located in the vicinity of Elfashir city,
is one of the maximum-security prisons in the country.

The incident occurred when the prison administration decided on
Wednesday to release about 96 public rights inmates.

The decision to set the prisoners free   had earlier been taken by the
Transitional Sovereign Council as a precautionary measure to confront
the Coronavirus pandemic, a matter that provoked fury of other inmates
who were excluded from the amnesty.

The state police director, Major General, Yahya Mohamed al-Nur, told
Darfur 24 that the Shala federal prison  witnessed Wednesday, riots by
inmates who were not covered by the amnesty decision, including those
convicted of murder and looting.
“They destroyed the prison wards and advanced towards the main gate in
an attempt break the Jail, so the prison authorities shoot to stop
them, killing one inmate and  wounding at least 9 others” Yahya
Mohamed al-Nur concluded .
