October 3, 2021 (Khartoum) The administration of US President Joe Biden announced that its support for Sudan depends on its leaders’ commitment to democratic transformation.

During a press briefing on the visit of the Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Jeffrey Feltman, to Khartoum, US State Department spokesman Ned Price expressed US government keenness to support the transitional period in Sudan.   Relations between Khartoum and Washington have improved after decades of estrangement due to the anti-Western policies of the ousted President Omar al-Bashir’s regime, under which the United States imposed sanctions on Sudan that lasted for more than 27 years.   Price warned that deviation from the democratic path and failure to meet key standards endanger the two countries’ relationship.  The senior American official that  US assistance to Sudan in the area of security cooperation to modernize the Sudanese armed forces, support in international financial institutions and debt relief, may be at stake if sudan fails to realise democratic transformtion.  A crisis erupted in Sudan between civilians and the military over the interpretation of the reasons that led to a failed coup attempt nearly two weeks ago.
