The UN security council held Wednesday open session to discuss the situation in Sudan in light of the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the country, after four months of fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary rapid support forces RSF.

The session was held at the request of the United Kingdom and the countries concerned with the Sudanese dossier at the security council.

Members listened to two briefings from UN under secretary general for African affairs Matthew Bobby and Adim Wosorno operation director at the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affa byirs OCHA.

In an update on the situation in Sudan, issued on August 7 , UNOCHA said an estimated 1,105 people have killed and 12,115 others injured throughout the country since eruption of the conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces RSF mid-April.

However, the report stated that casualties might be much higher than that, whereby some reports refer to the killing of three thousands people since the start of the war.

4 million people have been Internally displaced or crossed borders to neighboring countries, whereby 71 percent of the 3 million internally displaced persons IDPs are from Khartoum, according to IOM.

Huge repercussions

The UN under secretary general for African affairs Matthew Bobby told the security council of the importance of negotiated solution to end the war in Sudan as quickly as possible, warning that ” the more this war continues the more risk of fragmentation , International intervention , corrosion of sovereignty and the loss of Sudan future increases” .

The UN official said the conflict in Sudan still hugly affecting the country and its people, affirming that it was high time to end the foozling war and return to negotiation.

Indiscriminate and” directed attacks continue sometimes against civilians, civil leaders and the infrastructure, specially Khartoum, Darfur and North Kordofan, whereby the parties to the conflict ignore calls to protect civilians and meet their human rights and International humanitarian law commitments . Matthew Bobby added ”

The senior UN official shed light on on sexual violence” sexual violence still committed on wide scale , while killing, harming of children and their recruitment continue. Bobby said”

Adding that 80percent of hospitals throughout the country were out of service and 14 million children in Sudan -half of children in the country were in need of humanitarian support .

“It’s imperative to restore convining regular and direct communication forum with the parties at high level concerning humanitarian issues , to negotiate delivery of humanitarian aid, we need strong support from member countries to facilitate the task. Matthew concluded “
