Khartoum, August 10(Darfur 24 )UN humanitarian coordinator in Sudan has called for the importance of allowing all civilians, including refugees and others who attempt to flee from conflict zone to do so, in safety , without hindrance and under protection of the parties to the conflict.

After sixteen weeks of the conflict , 4 million people have been Internally displaced or crossed borders to neighboring countries, whereby 71 percent of the 3 million internally displaced persons IDPs are from Khartoum, according to IOM.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Mrs. Salami said civilians , including refugees still being subjected to horrible violations after elapse of four months of the conflict in Sudan.

She described the killing and targeting of those detained as hostages as ” unacceptable” affirming that it should stop immediately.

Referring that many of those trapped because of the fighting were not able – and sometimes banned from seeking safety in other places.those who are able to flee faces other risks ” They are subjected maltreatment, looting and harassment during their journey to safer areas” .

The UN coordinator said over the past two weeks she met with the Eritrean refugees who had been living in Khartoum , that the war had forced them to leave for Wadsharfey resettlement in Kassala. And they also spoke of the risk associated with leaving the capital and their fear of being subjected harassment while passing…

The UN coordinator called on the parties to the conflict in Sudan to ensure safe access to civilians fleeing violence in Khartoum, Darfur and other active fighting areas.

She said” this was what had been agreed upon in Jeddah on May 11 by the signatories of civilian protection declaration in Sudan.” The parties should honour their commitment to respect the International Humanitarian Law IHL and human rights law”

The international organization for migration IOM said before eruption of the conflict there were 1.1 million refugees in Sudan, mostly from the republic of South Sudan, Eritrea and Ethiopia.
