New York, Septemper 20 (Darfur24) TheUnited Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosie Meiri DiCarlo, said that the conflict in Sudan is exacerbated by the influx of weapons and ammunition from outside the country.

Addressing a ministerial meeting at the United Nations headquarters on Wednesday , the senior UN official said UN agencies received only 30% of Needs to contain the crisis in Sudan.

 

While the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator, Martin Griffiths, said the situation in Sudan is deteriorating, and called for serious talks in order to resolve the crisis and stop the fighting.

 

The meeting also comes in coordination with Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the European Union, and the African Union, in order to highlight the challenges, lack of funding, and obstacles facing the provision and delivery of humanitarian aid.

The meeting aims to urge UN member states to provide more support for the United Nations humanitarian response plans in Sudan and the region.

 

Speakers at the meeting agreed on the need for the international community to exert greater pressure on both sides of the conflict, the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces, to stop the fighting in Sudan and enable organizations to deliver humanitarian aid to those affected by the war, whether inside Sudan or in neighboring countries.

 

The High Commissioner for Refugees said that 1,200 children had died due to measles and malnutrition that spread due to the conflict, calling for the necessity of accelerating the humanitarian response to help the Sudanese people, noting that a third of the international community’s pledges towards Sudan had not been fulfilled.

 

While the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross said that their operations to provide aid to the Sudanese are affected by the security situation on the ground and the bureaucracy in the procedures, he called for the necessity of providing guarantees from both parties to the conflict and the armed groups in Sudan so that Red Cross employees can deliver their services to those affected by the war, but he warned that due tolack of resources the ICRC cannot expand its operations in Sudan, not only in the field of health, but also in the field of providing safe drinking water.

He also called for pressure on both sides of the conflict to stop the war, and added: “The international community must put more pressure to stop this conflict”.

 

In this context, the Saudi Foreign Minister called on the international community to put pressure on both sides of the fighting in Sudan to return to negotiation table.
