Addis Ababa, April 30 ( Darfur 24)The African Union High-level Mechanism on Sudan and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) said on Monday that prolonging the war increases the risk of eroding Sudan’s unity.

The African Union formed a high-level mechanism to work to restore stability and constitutional order in Sudan in cooperation with the military and civilian forces and the regional and international community.

The Mechanism and IGAD said, in a joint statement obtained by Darfur 24, that the tragic development of the military and humanitarian situation raises deep concern.

The statement indicated that the conflict in Sudan cannot be resolved militarily, which requires an immediate ceasefire followed by a cessation of hostilities, the provision of humanitarian aid and the launch of a comprehensive political process.

In the same context, the mechanism warned that the escalation of confrontations in Darfur and Kordofan constitutes a real threat to the security of the civilian population.

The two African blocs stressed that the attacks launched by the Rapid Support Forces on El Fasher entail the risk of large numbers of civilian deaths.

The army, the Rapid Support Forces, and the movements and militias allied with them have strengthened their preparedness to fight the bone-breaking battle in El Fasher, amid global concern that the battles there will increase the suffering of the displaced.
