The governor of South Darfur State , Major General Hashim Khaled, said  the joint government forces have arrested 3 of the perpetrators who committed incident in  city of Mershing on Monday evening, in which 6 people were killed and more than 20 others were injured.

Following his visit to the wounded people at Nyala Teaching Hospital on Wednesday, the governor said that the state government had sent  forces from the army, police, and Rapid Support Forces on 20 vehicles to track down the perpetrators.

“Majority of the wounded   people have been discharged from hospital after receiving treatment, while 8 others are still being healed”. The governor added.

According to eyewitnesses, on Monday evening, gunmen opened fire on a gathering of citizens in the city of Mershing, 85 km north of Nyala, the capital of South Darfur, killing 6 people and wounding 21 others.

The Governor, attributed the occurrence of the incident to the spread  of weapons in the hands of civilians , saying that official and popular efforts must be combined to collect weapons from the hands of civilians , and make it only in the hands of the regular forces.

“There will be no security, stability or development unless weapons are collected”. The governor further added.

“Perpetrators are being investigated to get the facts, then , information will be made  available to the public opinion.” The governor concluded

Mershing had witnessed last September a similar incident in which 5 people were killed and many  others were injured. However, demonstrators took to the streets protesting over the government’s failure to protect citizens.
