An attack by gunmen in  Kuloni, Abyei district, has resulted in the death of about 29 people and the injury of 18 others, as well as kidnapping of 15 children.

The incident sparked wide reactions inside Sudan, amid accusations that  supporters of former Bashir were behind the violent attack, to create a crisis  between Sudan and South Sudan in the disputed region.

The Sudanese government spokesman, Faisal Muhammad Salih, said in a statement received by Darfur 24 that the transitional government had received with great regret the news of the attack that took place in the villages surrounding the Abyei region, which killed a number of the citizens.

The statement condemned the attack on unarmed civilians, saying that the escalation and tribal incitement would only lead to more tension and violence.

The minister of information, emphasized that the government will not allow  Sudanese blood to be shed in any part of Sudan, and will work to protect unarmed civilians and preserve their dignity, calling on the UNISFA forces present in the region to move to control security conditions and protect civilians.

The transitional government renews its position that the Abyei issue can only be resolved through dialogue, understanding and coexistence between different communities.” Said Faisal

The Chief Administrative Officer of Abyei District, Kuala Alor Koal, said in a statement to Tamazj Radio that an armed group had attacked the village of kuloni on Wednesday, killing 29 people, including 9 children, and wounding 18 others, besides kidnapping 15 children and setting number of houses on fire.

He explained that the attackers came from the areas affiliated with the Al-Masirah tribe.

“What happened was a disaster, the issue of Abyei goes to a dangerous juncture.  killing of 29 people in one day is very unfortunate, so we call upon the international community and the government to resolve the issue,” he added.

Sudanese activists have accused the Department operation of the security and intelligence services of being behind the crime.

“They are  instigated by the Islamic movement to cause chaos and obstruct the transitional government’s march.” Said the  Sudanese activist

They pointed out that the crime comes within the framework of criminal operations organized by the Islamic movement. Adding that the incident was similar to the ones of Port Sudan, Al-Qadarif, Kassala and Khartoum, demanding that the Islamic movement  be classified as a terrorist organization, calling for its leaders be arrested.
