March 3, 2020 (El-fashir) Local Authorities in El Fasher, North Darfur, decided Tuesday to stop gold mining operations for in “Jaffina” northwest of El Fasher.
The decision to stop mining in the area, was taken after the government had received complaints from residents of the area, complaining of the effects of gold exploration.
However, the gold mining in the area led to the deaths of dozens of animals, and the destruction of the environment, due to the use of chemicals such as mercury and cyanide.
The Executive Director of Al-Fashir locality, Abd al-Rahim Mohamed Ahmad, said during the meeting with the miners and the people of the area that the local government decided to stop all types of gold exploration in the region, and called on the miners to vacate the site immediately, indicating that decision was taken to preserve lives and safety of human being .
For his part, a local community leader, Mohamed Shamin Ahmed, said that the local mining operations had destroyed most of the rangelands and polluted all water sources.
