Authorities in South Darfur released Monday some members of the National Congress Party NCP who were arrested in mid-February in the wake of sabotage demonstrations in the city of Nyala.

Last February, people took to the streets in the state capital Nyala, protesting over high prices of consumer goods.

However, the week-long protest turned into an act of looting and vandalism, where a number of police officers were injured and a riot police van was set on fire.

The Governor of South Darfur, Musa Mahdi, had earlier said that he was awaiting a report from the state’s legal advisor to decide whether to release the detainees or bring them to trial.
