Khartoum, December 27(Darfur24) The United Nations revealed that an estimated 16,200 people have been displaced, and 35 people have been killed or injured during the tribal clashes that took place in the Beleil area of South Darfur last Friday.

 

According to a statement by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), clashes broke out on December 23 in the locality of Beleil, South Darfur, reportedly following a fight that took place on December 21 between young men from the Arab Rizeigat and the Dajo tribe, which quickly escalated into intercommunal violence.

 

The statement added that there are unverified local reports that 10 people were killed and 25 injured. Initial reports indicated that several returnee villages in Beleil district had been burned including Amore, Jemiz Arba, Singo, Umm Hudaydah, Kamaski, Takla and Duca.

The villages belong to the Dajo tribe and are inhabited by more than 10,000 spontaneous and seasonal returnees from IDP camps including Kalima Otash, Dreij and Belil .

 

According to the Government’s Humanitarian Aid Commission in South Darfur, an estimated 16,200 people have been displaced and have taken refuge in Dreij IDP camp in Nyala district, Kalma and Beleil camps in Beleil  locality, and Duma IDP camp in Merching area.

 

The displaced  people are in dire need of humanitarian assistance as people lost assets and food commodities as their villages were set on fire.
