El Fasher, December 3 ( Darfur 24)

Two people were killed, one of them a 19-year-old girl, as herders clashed with farmers on Thursday in the village of Sarfaya, 35 km northwest of El Fasher, the provincial capital of North Darfur State.

A local community leader from Sarfaya area , called Badr al-Din Mohamed Yahya, told Darfur 24 that livestock herders tried to forcibly bring their livestock into one of the local residents’ farm, which led to them getting into a quarrel, so one of the herders opened fire on the farmer causing him severe injury where he later died at a health center. He added” The herdsmen also shoot indiscriminately killing a 19-year-old girl.

He stated that the residents of the region were displaced to the areas of “Shaqra and Buhaira” adjacent to the city of El Fasher, fearing that they might be subjected to another armed attack after the incident, however, herders didn’t immediately respond to Darfur24 request for comment.

Armed confrontations between herders and farmers are repeated every year in conjunction with the agricultural harvest season, which leads to deaths and injuries on both sides.

In the past, state governments adopted budgets and security plans to secure the harvest season and prevent recurring clashes between herders and farmers, but they did not play any role this year due to the ongoing war in the country.
